The work above is both created my Julia Pott. Julia Pott is known
for her "awkward"animation using awkward characters. It has been said
that the animated characters are there to act out her inner confusions. She
recently graduated from Royal College of Art back in 2011 with a MA in
Animation. She now works in America, New York, Brooklyn. She has been
identified as the 25 New Face of Independent Film by Filmmaker Magazine in
2012. This type of work is more of animation; it is used to tell a story. Julia
Pott mostly draws her art work. On her website shows some of her art work
on her sketch book. http://www.juliapott.com/Sketchbook .
The work above is her "Personal Illustration". So it had no
intention of being used for other that just showing off her work to the public.
I have chosen to analyse figure 1 as I found it interesting on how Julia Potts
draws these "awkward" characters. To me, I find them very odd, all
the characters have different shapes, allure very much so detail to define
their character. Also, what fascinated me was the use of the odd shapes in the
background.
The title of this
work is "Here with me", it was created back in 2010 so during her
course. The genre of work this relates to is illustration, the artist is trying
to show a short story with the images she has conjured up. You can tell
this by the characters and also the words used over them. I think that this
work is more about friendship; the title gives off that idea, "Here with
me" but also within the illustration shows "I Love THAT YOURE HERE
WITH ME". The way the phrase is shown to use seems to be in a form of
speech bubble like. It's like bother characters are thinking the same thing.
This strongly gives off this feeling of friendship along with the theme of
friendship. I don't think it could be a relationship of love as the characters
looks male and also in the background it sees they are camping out. The work
just simply tells us a story about two animals, camping, enjoying time with
a friend. I assume that the artist got the inspiration from her self, as this art piece was part of her "personal Illustration" where the work she does under that category is more inspired by her feeling, emotions and all other aspects of herself. To emphasise on that, she has said that her work are about her inner confusion.
The artist has said (on her blog) that this work was done on an A2 size paper which is very big. The materiel used is most likely to be card or plain paper. The technique used for this work is mostly hand drawn using a pen. It is very detailed like the fur texture on the raccoon like animal. Also the over looking human face on the left is shaped like a tree but with facial features like hair, nose and eyes. Furthermore, the colours used within the image are light, they contrast well with all the other light colours, for example the mountain peach colour.

The materials used within this illustration is different to the materials used in figure 1, for example, the artists used real life images rather than drawing them, it more of a collage I suppose than an illustration .
